What is the 1st thing that comes to your mind when we talk about Goa?

Oh wait…! let me guess parties, beaches, sun, sand, sea, nightlife, music, hippie culture, a Portuguese colony, friendly locals, Konkan dishes and you name it, Goa has got it! I think this is what helps Goa remain as a hotspot among everyone, especially the younger generation.

My 1st time to Goa

I always dreamt of going to Goa and letting myself free into the wilderness, right from the heydays of my Childhood.

Above all let me first tell you, what aroused my inner feelings towards visiting Goa. Maybe it is a cliche thing you would have heard it time and again in other blogs or when you are talking to the people. As far as most of the Indians are concerned, the movie “Dil Chata Hai” would have played a crucial role in inspiring them to visit Goa.

During College days we did plan many trips to Goa, but none of them got materialized due to various reasons. It was kind of a “ Better late than never” situation for us. But this time there was no other reason on this earth which could literally stop us. We planned for Goa in the afternoon and left for Goa on the same night without much planning.

About Goa

Goa is a small and peaceful state in the Konkan region of India. It shares the borderline with the state Karnataka and Maharashtra. Goans mostly speak the Konkani language.

Goa is called the party capital of India. Every year, we can notice millions and millions of international as well as domestic tourists coming to party and relax in Goa. Furthermore, you can see the Portuguese flavors and cultures everywhere within Goa, as this place was invaded by Portuguese, who stayed here till the late 19th century. Goa is divided into 2 parts North Goa and South Goa.

Here we are going to see about North Goa in particular.

Best Time To Visit Goa

As far as I know, Goa is well suited to travel in all seasons, but as per the masses, the best time to visit Goa is between November to March.

New Year season

It is between November to March the climate is very pleasant and it is a season of and New Year, so the whole of Goa comes alive and looks very colorful during this time.

If you are the one who likes to party harder and enjoy the nightlife to the full extent, then this is the best time to visit. However, there are parties in other seasons also but those not as crazy as these parties during the new year.

On the other hand, there is little downside during this season. There is a huge crowd following where ever you go and very hard to get accommodations. Stay, travel, food, parties, or whatever you come across is very costly. Places look a little dirty when compared with other seasons due to overcrowding.

Summer Season (March to June)

This season is very hot and humid, so most of the tourists stay away from Goa during this season. You can still visit, stay indoors till evening and start your day as Sun goes down the horizon.

Beaches will be clear and empty. Cost for stays, food, travel, and other activities will be reduced. You can relax and have a peaceful time during this period.

Monsoon Season (June to October)

This is the best time to see the other side of the Goa, full of greenery everywhere and drizzles all over, makes this place look more beautiful and pleasant. For most people, rain is a big letdown as this place is known for its beaches, sun, sand so they opt to stay away during this phase. Even in this season prices are very low.

This is the best season for people who wants to have a me-time for themselves peacefully and for the people who love to travel slow.

Note: There aren\’t many parties in Summer as well as Monsoon season.

How To Reach Goa

 Air

The closest and only airport is Dabolim International airport which is 30 km from Panaji.

There is good connectivity of flights from major cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Delhi. You can also find flights connecting few European and Arabs countries as well.

However, if you are planning for budget travel you need not worry as there are other mediums which will cost less.

Rail Route

The train journey from Bangalore is one of the most beautiful and scenic things you can ever see. Train passes through the Western Ghats region which is lush green on either side with rain forests. We can see gigantic Dudhsagar falls in the Karnataka Goa border.

The trains are well connected to Goa from major south Indian cities, but you have to book the tickets one or two months prior. It will cost around  INR 400 to 500 per ticket for an ordinary sleeper coach and will vary based on the comforts you need.

Buses

There are plenty of overnight buses from major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai.

You can get sleeper or semi-sleeper buses with AC or non AC. The price might vary based on seasons and holidays.

We traveled by bus this time as our plan was instantly made. From Bangalore to Goa ticket price was INR 800 / person and it cost us the same amount when we returned back.

How To Travel Within Goa

All kinds of 2 wheelers and cars are available for rent and you can choose based on your comfort level and budget.

I would suggest you take two-wheeler for rent as roads are small and in certain places parking would be a problem. Two-wheeler rent will cost around INR 250 to 350 per day. If you are a group of fewer than four members then its better to take a two-wheelers

A self-driving car for rent will cost around INR 1500 to 3000 per day. The rent cost will vary based on seasons and weekends so make to ask in detail before you rent a car.

Above all, make sure you verify all the vehicle documents and vehicle condition before renting.

If possible take a pic of a vehicle of the vehicle both interior and exterior while renting. Always carry the original driving license as some of the vendors won’t give you a vehicle without it.

Note: Vehicle Rent excludes fuel charges.

Travel Responsibly By Bicycle In Goa

You can rent a bicycle for INR 100 TO 150 / day to travel within Goa. The distance between the major places will be at least 10 to 15 km, therefore, think twice before renting a cycle.

Use Goa Public Transport

You can also use Goa public transport bus to roam around. The frequency and connectivity of buses are damn good, but it might involve a lot walking and chances are you might get tired before reaching the destinations.

You can book a stay in Anjuna beach or Baga beach. You can choose the stay as per your budget and convenience,

 

Where did we stay

We searched for stays in hotels near Anjuna beach, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to find one that could accommodate all 6 of us under one roof.

After a few minutes of searching, we thought of going to Baga beach in search of stays. At that time we didn’t know much about the guest houses in the surrounding. As we were coming out of one of the hotels after enquiring for a room, we came across a local guy called Joseph, he told us about the guesthouses and also directed us.

We went to one of the guesthouses that were right behind Anjuna beach. This place had no name and it looked like a typical house with no signboards stating it is a Guesthouse. An old lady named “Maria” owned this property. We called her Maria aunty and she was extremely kind to us. Maria Aunty shared about her personal life; her son who stayed in Mumbai; must-visit places with a small story behind all places, we were all happy and excited to know more about Goa from her.

It was a cozy place with a small garden; well; 2 bedrooms; a kitchen and a beautiful hall with an antique structure which was just 80 mt from the beach.

Oh, wait…! It is not over yet, we were surprised to know the cost, it cost us just INR 300/person for a night. What else can we ask for, such a beautiful place for less price will make any person happy?

This property also had two more small houses which looked average like a modern-day house with no uniqueness.

The guesthouse is near to places like Curlies and Shiva Valley, which are known for best parties in town.

Hostels In Goa

Best Place to stay for people who are traveling on a budget and who love solo traveling. You can see people from all over the world staying in hostels. You can easily make friends and learn a lot about the journey of other travelers. Usually, backpackers, solo, and slow travelers prefer to stay in hostels.

Stay in hostels will cost around INR 200 to 500/ person for a day. There are plenty of hostels in Goa as it is a major tourist hub. Above all, there are some hostels that provide breakfast, the cost of which is included in the rent price itself. Hostels are all about sharing.

Hotels and Guesthouses In Goa

This kind of stay is well suited if you are travelling in a group. You will get more privacy and comfort, but you have to shell out a little bit more money than hostels. Stay in hotels and guesthouses will cost INR 1500 to 3000 / 2 members and it will vary based on comforts you seek for.

There are many resorts if you are looking for more comfort and luxury.No need to worry there is something for all kinds of budget.

Best Place To Visit In Goa

Goa can be separated in North Goa and South Goa. North Goa is the most happening place which is famous for parties, beaches, Nightlife, water activities, forts and hence we huge crowd in this region.

On the other hand, South Goa is famous among people who want to maintain a low profile and peacefully relax on the beaches. There are plenty of places as well as parties in South Goa, but they are not as popular as North Goa.

Here we will see about North Goa.

Beaches in Goa

You can find plenty of beaches in this region, the beaches mentioned below are popular among the tourists.

Anjuna Beach

Popular for its trance parties and Hippie lifestyle. This beach is 22 km away from the Goa capital Panaji. Anjuna hosts a flea market every Wednesday, where a variety of products from all around the world are available. We can a lot of backpackers, lazy travelers, long stayers, and hippies staying near Anjuna as stays and guest houses are a little cheap compared to other places.

In curlies and Shiva Valley present in Anjuna, we can experience full-fledged trance parties.

Baga Beach

Named after the Baga Greek(small narrow waterways). Baga has the longest sandy shores in Goa. This beach is popular among the masses and is known for its water sports and diving adventures.

Vagator Beach

This is close to a Chapora fort. Vagator beach is known for its scenic beauty. You can see rocky outcrops and palm grooves around the beach and additionally this beach is surrounded by amazing red cliffs, which elevates the beach to another level.

It is a laid back and relaxed beach with fewer people. Best known for its rave parties and open-air clubs.

Churches in Goa

If you want to experience a bit of history and culture of Portuguese colonization then there is no better place to visit than the churches.

Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

It was built as a chapel in those days for sailors to offer thanks to God for delivering them safely to Goa and before setting sail away from Goa.later in the year 1691 this chapel was rebuilt as a church,

This church is a blend of Portuguese Baroque and Goan style architecture.

The appearance of steps is of zig-zag style which is distinct when compared to other churches. True to its name “immaculate” it is painted white. This church is also called the crown of Panaji as it is built on top of a small hill facing the town.

Reis Magon Church

This church was built in the year 1555 on the banks of the river Mandovi and it is one of the oldest churches of Goa. It is close to the Reis Magos Fort.

The church Reis Magos is a dedication to three wise men that appear in the Christmas story. You can experience the feast of three wise men in Reis Magos Chruch.

Forts In Goa

Chapora Fort

It is one of the most beautiful forts of Goa. This is where few scenes of the famous “Dil Chata hai” movie was shot and it raises to fame then onwards. Fort rises high above the Chapra river and the Vagator beach. We can see Chapora river joining the Great Arabian see from the top of the fort. Shahpura fort was built by Adil Shah and later it was renamed to Chapora fort by Portuguese as it was on the banks of the Chapora river.

This fort offers a fantastic scenic view from all sides. You can see the beach, lush greenery and the river on the other side.

The best time to visit will be evening as the sunset colors paint the sky into orange the whole view looks mesmerizing and spectacular.

Timings: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Reis Magos Fort

It was built to keep away the invaders making their way up the Mandovi river to attack the Panjim. Newly arrived viceroy and dignitaries used this fort as a residence during Portuguese time

After losing its position for strategic operations in the late 19th century it served as a prison.

And now it is a well-preserved fort which serves as a cultural center and art gallery. There is an exhibition hall inside the fort. The walls of the hall are hung with images of historical relevance. We visited this place to get rid of the maddening crowd.

You need to trek for 600 mt before reaching the fort or else you can get into a small van that takes you to the fort entrance free of cost.

Tuesday to Saturday: INR 50/ Adult.

Sunday/ Government Holidays: INR 10 / person

Children below 8 years: No entry fee

Things To Do In Goa

Goa is a land of limitless fun and entertainment. Not just parties all kinds of activities inland as well as water. There is something for everyone who visits Goa.

Water Sports In Goa

As Goa is the land of beaches there are all kinds of fun-filled and adrenaline rushing water activities. You can choose parasailing, jet skiing, Speed boat. Snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, banana ride, fly board, water skiing, fishing, etc.

Always be ready to argue as they might charge more than the actual. Baga, Vagator and Calangute beaches are famous for water activities

Flea Market Shopping Goa

If you are in Goa and if you love to shop and eat on the streets, then you better not miss these flea markets. Flea markets are usually very active from November to April. Flea markets are extremely colorful and offer local as well as products from around the world. Prices are very reasonable and you can shop till you drop.

There are many flea markets in Goa but one in Anjuna and Arpora are very famous among them.

Anjuna Flea Market 

This was known as a “Hippie Exchange center” in the past and now it is a full-fledged market. It is held on Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. It happens near Anjuna Beach.

Arpora Night Market

This is a night market held on Saturdays from 6:00 pm to late night at 1:00 am. This place is 5 km from Anjuna beach. There are food stalls which offer cuisines from all over the world.

Attend Parties In Goa

How can someone come to goa and not attend parties? Make sure to check out at least one party, even if it is not your cup of coffee.

“PSY Trance” is the popular choice of music in Goa and it originated here.

Goa is one of the states in India where gambling is completely legal. You can find onshore as well as offshore casinos, but there are some restrictions to offshore casinos as they can have only electronic games.

Most casinos are open 24/7 and there is an entry fee for all casinos. Entry fee will be around INR 1500 to INR 3000 and it will vary depending on the games you play and weekends. We can find onshore casinos in the Mandovi river.

There is a dress code to every casino and it will vary for different casinos. so make sure you enquire before you go.

ATM\’s And Network Availability In Goa

As Goa is a significant tourist attraction you will find ATM machines in all major places. All the places will accept the card if you intend to purchase something.

To be on the safer side always carry cash with you, because most of the time ATM machine running out of cash is a possibility.

Mobile Network In Goa

When it comes to mobile network all networks work well in Goa. As per locals point of view, Vodofone is the best network in Goa.

Where And What To Eat In Goa

Last but not least, this is one of my favorites no matter where I go. I love eating regional food prepared by a local person more than food prepared in a restaurant. It is not an everyday affair but I have to tell you this time I was lucky enough to eat one of the hot favorite foods of local that are Goan Fish curry.

Goan Fish Curry by Maria Aunty In Anjuna

Our guest house owner prepared fish curry on our request. She usually won’t prepare for any of her guests, but I don’t know what made her say yes to request. She took us to the nearby market to purchase fresh fish. Goan Fish Curry was prepared in muddy pots like how they use to do in the olden days. As she was preparing the aromas started hitting our nostrils.his was one of the best fish dishes I have ever eaten in my life.

Best restaurants and foods to have in Goa

Anand Bar (Anjuna Siolim Road)

Anyone who claims to know Goa will definitely! know this place. This place prepares traditional Goan recipes and best known for its seafood.

 

Best dishes to try in Anand Bar: fish thali, butter garlic prawns, kingfish Rava fry, Rava fried prawns.

Thalassa (Vagator beach)

It prepares Mediterranean and Greek cuisines. This is a favorite among many Bollywood stars. If you want to witness the best sunsets then this is the place.

Cashew Feni

A famous homemade liquor made from cashew fruit. Feni is a part of Goan traditional food from the past 400 to 500 years. It is considered as one of the famous drinks of Goans. It is also used as a traditional remedy for cough and cold. Not only cashew you can also find coconut and toddy palm feni. Moreover when you want to drink always drink feni with a soft drink( Like sprite).

Conclusion

People here are always chilled, relaxed, friendly, share love towards others, and lead their life in a slow and steady-state without much expectations. Goan lifestyle would make any human being on any day jealous because they always spread love and expect nothing in return.

Goa is not just about parties and nightlife, it is much more than than that. The blend between Portuguese and Indian culture makes this place all the more exciting. It is a place that would offer something for everyone, so why wait just pack your backs and head to Goa.
