Ethina Bhuja Trek is a lesser-known trail sitting amidst western ghats near Dharmastala temple. The peak of this mighty mountain resembles the shoulders of an ox, hence it is called “ Ethina Bhuja” which means “ox shoulders” in local language Kannada. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and adventurous trekking destinations across Chikmagalur to have me-time with nature. However, you will hardly find anyone, as this is hidden and unknown to the masses.

 Trekking To Ethina Bhuja or Shishila Gudda

Interestingly, there are 2 routes to Ethina Bhuja Trek.

Trekking Route From Shishila Village

Shishila is a small village which is 15 Km from Dharmastala.  If you love trekking then take this 13 Km long trek which will normally take 6 hours to complete. You will start your trek near the age-old Durga temple where locals offer prayer every day. As you stroll into the dense forest this trekking trail leads you through multiple streams, tall grassland, and steep valley before reaching the top. 

Trekking route From Byrapura Village

Byrapura is a quaint village in Mudigere taluk. It is a short trek of 5 km which will take about 2 hours to reach the peak. This is definitely good for the travellers that don’t trek on a regular basis.

Both sunset and sunrise views are absolutely delightful and breathtaking. Hence, make sure you reach the peak by evening and camp here to view the mist-filled sunrise too. Besides this, the whole view of lush green valley, small streams, ghats, and clouds that pass all over you is something not to be missed.

You can even camp overnight on the hilltop and homestays will help you out with this. There is a flat land just 50 m below the peak where you can set up a tent and bonfire. No need to worry about water as there is a small stream passing by near the camping site. You can make this a home for a night and gaze at stars as the wind blow gently at your face. Furthermore, you can even carry small portables stoves if you are fond of cooking.

Note: Be careful about the mighty tuskers and wild pigs that inhabit in the nearby vicinity.

How To Reach Ethina Bhuja Trekking Base

There are frequent buses from Bangalore that takes you to Dharmastala Temple. And, from here you have to either go to Shishila or Byrapura.

Dharmastala To Shishila

Shishila is 32 Km from Dharmastala. You can catch a local bus that drops you at Kokkada village and from there you can take a jeep ride to reach Shishila

Dharmastala To Byrapura

Mudigere is 55 Km from Dharmastala. You can catch a local bus that drops you at Mudigere and from there you can take a jeep ride or hop into another bus to reach Byrapura.

Where To Stay And What To Eat Near Ethina Bhuja Trek

There are a few homestays near the Shishila and Byrapura village. These homestays provide lip-smacking delicious local cuisines like idli, dosa, upma, Kesari bath, rice sambar, etc. Apart from this, they also provide a trekking guide to help us throughout our treks. Don’t expect luxury as most of the stays is in remote areas.

Above all, there is a Kapila river flowing here called “Shishila Matsya Teertha”, so that means you can go for a swim.

Hebbe Falls Trek.

Hebbe Falls is a beautiful gem that hides inside the Bhadra Tiger reserve in Kemmanagundi hills, Chikmagalur. Falls are set amidst the dense forest and plenty of coffee plantation makes it gain a picturesque edge. Hebbe Falls is formed by freshwater springs that exist on top of mountains. You can spot water cascades down through slippery black rocks from a height of 551 feet. 

In fact, it is a 2 tier waterfall, the bigger one is called Doddahebbe falls and the smaller one is called Chikkahebbe falls. Not to mention, the beautiful pool below the falls where you can swim all day long. Above all, the water here is believed to be infused with medicinal herbs, hence good for skin, so never miss an opportunity to take a dip  

Indeed, this place also acted as a summer retreat center for the Wodeyar Rulers majorly Krishnaraja Wodeyar 𐌠𐌞. 

Hebbe Falls Trekking

You need to trek through steep narrow paths inside the forest for 10 km to reach the Hebbe falls. Trek starts from the Forest check post near the Karnataka Horticulture Department guest house. As you make your way into the forest you will come across a tiny pond, 3 beautiful flowing streams, and Chowdeshwari Mahasakthi temple. Furthermore, you can hear the sound of water splashing the ground as you are inching towards the falls.

Whereas, if you are an expert and love trekking more then you can start from Tarikere which is 35 km. This trek will take you an entire day to complete and you will be mostly walking through forests and the probability of sighting wildlife i9s more. Usually, you can spot mighty tuskers, spotted deers, wild boar, and a few other exotic wildlife.

 If you don’t fancy hiking then you can opt for adventurous and bumpy Jeep Rides through muddy tracks and coffee estates from the forest checkpoint. Usually, they will charge around  Rs 400/ head and it is an hour ride. But be prepared to take a few steps in the last phase from Khoday’s estate as the jeep wouldn’t go beyond this point.

Best Time To Visit Hebbe Falls

Like every other place, this falls is great to visit during the winter season, i.e from October to February. But if you want to witness the falls in full flow with mist surrounding, then head to this place in Peak monsoon. Of course, trekking is a  bit risky in monsoons as there will be leeches, the path will be slippery, and dangerous to swim as water flows full-fledged, but believe us the view will be extremely fulfilling.

How to Reach Hebbe Waterfalls

You can hop on to government buses that are frequently available from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. And, from Chikmagalur,  Hebbe falls is 70 km away, hence you can either take direct buses or hire a private cab.

Kudremukh Trek Is One Of  The Best Places To Visit In Chikmagalur

Popularly known for the distinctive shape of the peak, which resembles the horse face. In fact, “ Kudremukh” in native Kannada language means “Horse face”.

Trek begins from Mullodi village, which is 5 km away from Balegal. To reach Mullodi either you need to take a jeep ride from Balegal or if you feel like exploring more you can take a walk. Now that you reach base, you will be allotted with a guide, who will be part of your adventurous journey till you reach base again. It is a 22 km long and hectic trek, hence it is advisable to start as early as possible to gain an advantage.

Once you reach the top, the view of the valley beneath you, as if the green carpet has been laid out on the whole mountain is mind-blowing.

If you are lucky you can spot bison, spot deer, sambar, and peacock while trekking.

Note:- In Kudremukh trek, they allow only 50 people/day.

Mullayanagiri Trek

Mullayanagiri, renowned as Karnataka’s highest peak, is located in Baba Budan range of western ghats. The mountain got its name as Tapasvi Mullapa Swamy had mediated in one of the caves just below the peak.

You can reach the summit either through trekking or you can take your vehicle to the top from where the peak is 500 steps away.
If you happen to choose trekking then you need to take the Sarpadhari route. After getting down in Chikmagalur, you can ask any Auto rickshaw guy to drop you near the trekking base and he might charge you around Rs. 150 to 200.

You can start marching towards the peaks, on a small muddy path in between dense forest. The path you take has a narrow stream, waterfalls and at times the trail gets harder as you need to make a 60-degree steep climb to proceed further.

As you get closer to peak the breeze gets colder and the visibility becomes almost blurry as it is covered with dense mist. There is a shiva temple, Nandi statue, and two old colorful caves formed by the mixture of several minerals near the peak. The panoramic view of Chikmagalur city; aromatic coffee plantation; green patches of grasslands; small streams, lugged rocks; Baba Budan Giri peak, and mist everywhere makes this look like a tiny paradise.

Above all, as the sun rises through the sea of clouds, it sure looks magical beyond explanation.

Z point Kemmanagundi Trek

It is a short trek that begins from  Kemmanagundi Raj Bhavan, located inside a dense forest of western ghats. There is a checkpoint here and you will not be allowed to carry any kind of alcohol or drugs.

The first phase of the trek until Shanti waterfalls is easy. The second phase i.e. trek towards the peak.is a little harder, as the path becomes more slippery; steep and sometimes you need to walk on narrow ridges that have steep valley on one side and big mountains leaning on you on the other side. And what makes it scarier is, there are no fences or railings that support you and one slip can land you right on the bottom of the mountain.

The summit will receive you with the cool breeze no matter what time of the day it is and sometimes strong winds can blow you off the ground. There are many factors like the bird’s eye view of the city; a steep valley with a variety of trees; at certain points walking above the clouds and the view of the sun going down the horizon will make any traveler go crazy.
