Kudlu Falls resides deep inside the jungles of the Western Ghats, near the Hebri town of Udupi. Water plunges through 2 gigantic mountains that have rough terrains and patches of green vegetation, from a height of about 150 ft. Not to mention, about a big pool of 5 ft depth formed at the bottom of the falls, where you can swim and laze around playing. Local people here consider water to be holy as it was inhabited by many sages in the past. So, never miss an opportunity to take a dip in the holy waters of Kudlu Falls. This waterfall is formed by the river Sita and hence it is also “Sita Falls”

You need to trek for 3 to 4 km to reach the foot of the falls. Begin your trek from the parking lot at the base. Trekking trail leads you through a small stream, followed by concrete well-laid steps inside the forest with tall lofty trees. Sound of water cascading down the hill can be heard from a distance. Finally, you need to jump across a few slippery rocky boulders to reach the Kudlu falls. The best thing about the place is its calm and serene surroundings with hardly any crowd.

If you stroll further near the waterfall, you can spot another falls called “Manga Theertha” on top of the hill. However, due to the high-risk involved in hiking to this falls, no human hikes this little beauty. Mostly you can spot Monkeys hiking this fall, hence it is called” Manga” which means monkey in the Kannada Language.

You will hardly find any eateries around the corner, so make sure to carry packed food along with you.

How To Reach Kudlu Waterfalls

You can take a private or Government bus from Udupi\’s main bus stand to reach Hebri town, which is 42 Km away. From Hebri you can hire a taxi which will drop at the base of Kudlu Theertha Falls. Followed by a short trek of 3 km will take you to the bottom of.falls.Else head to this falls in your own vehicles, which is perfect as you can also visit Agumbe, which is a few miles away.

Maidadi viewpoint appears to have hopped straight outta heaven and is stuck at 15 km from the temple town Kalasa. With the view of mist-filled mountains, lofty peaks, clouds running haywire, lush green forest, tiny streams meandering through mountains, and unending steep valleys this place in western ghats sure to make you fall in love with nature. As the cool breeze gently brushes through your face, you can clearly spot the Kudremukh range on one side and Ballalarayana Durga on another side.

You need to make an uphill hike of 500 m from Kanive resort to reach the top. Never miss out on sunrise or sunset which looks spectacular and dramatic from this point. On a clear day, you can even spot Dharmasthala and Netravathi river meandering its ways through mountains from a distance. Besides this, you can even set up your tents and spend your night gazing at stars. Head to this place during winter season i.e. from October to March to enjoy nature to the fullest.

If you are a biker and want to experience off-roading then try hitting the trail with your bike. Else you can take a bumpy jeep ride to reach the Maidadi viewpoint.

There is a beautiful resort by name “Kanive” near the Maidadi viewpoint, Hence this place is also known as Kanive viewpoint. You can park your vehicles near this resort.

Kadambi Falls is a seasonal waterfall that is located within the Kudremukh range of Western Ghats. White water gushes down through the rocks from a height of 30 ft and forms a pool at the foot of the falls. This fall is set amidst nature with a lot of greenery in the form of trees, shrubs, creepers, etc bordering it.

Kadambi Falls is right next to Sringeri and Kudremukh main road and it is clearly visible from the bridge nearby. As and when you are driving through this route, the sound of milky white water slides down and droplets sprinkling all over the bridge, will make any individual spare a minute and watch this beauty. However, if you wish to get closer to falls, you can park your vehicle on the bridge and hike down from the other side of the bridge. The path may seem little tricks as you need to perform small stunts. With a few hops and jumps across slippery rocks and woods will lead you to the bottom of falls. What next, take off your clothes, wear a swimsuit, and take a leap into the water to beat the heat.

During monsoon as the rivers run free and wild, Kadambi falls and the region around it comes alive full-fledged. So, the best time to visit this place will be during peak monsoon and post-monsoon( i.e. winter) from June to January. There isn’t any entry fee to the falls. However, try to avoid getting into the water in monsoon due to the high-risk factor involved.

Apsarakonda Falls Trek

You need to trek for 15 odd minutes in a well-defined path that will lead you to Apsarakonda falls. After you park your vehicle, there is a small garden and there you should take a path that leads downwards to reach the ancient Narasimha temple. You should descend the concrete steps that are placed behind the temple. Once you reach this point you have to walk a few yards downwards.  And try to follow the sound of water crashing to the ground then you arrive at the falls.

Pond of angels

Apparently, locals believe that angels used to fly down to Apsarakonda falls to take baths and relax in the olden days. Hence, this falls is called “ Apsarakonda” which means  “pond of angels” in the local language. Considering the beauty falls possess, no wonder the angel came down to relax here.

Pandavas Cave

On the other hand, you can spot huge and attractive caves near the falls called Pandava caves. As per the legends, Pandavas of Mahabharata stayed in these caves during their exile period. Do not enter the caves as there are poisonous snakes inhabiting inside it.

If possible try carrying your own food, as you will not find any eateries other than a small canteen that serves local food.

You can pay a visit to Umamba Mahaganapathi and  Ugra Narasimha temples which are tucked in caves from time immemorial. As per legends, these temples were established by saints who used to meditate here, thousands of years ago.

How To reach Apsarakonda 

Coastal town Honnavara is just 8 km away from Apsarakonda village. Hence,.you can either hop into a bus which is less frequent or aboard an auto-rickshaw from Honnavara. Otherwise, you can take a bus to Kasarkod beach and stroll towards Apsarakonda for 1.5 to 2 Km, there are signboards to guide you.

Baba Budangiri is a mighty mountain standing tall at 1,895 m in the coffee land of Karnataka, Chikmagalur. Nestled amidst western ghats these hills are also known as “ Dattagiri “ and it is the 2nd  tallest peak in Karnataka. This place got its name from a Sufi saint Baba Budan who inhabited here during the late 16th century. 

There is a Dattatreya temple (Incarnation of Lord Shiva) and a Dargah of  Saint Baba Budan. Hence, these hills act as a popular pilgrimage center for both Hindus and Muslims. Besides this, Baba Budangiri also remains as a hotspot amongst the hardcore adventure freaks, travelers, and nature enthusiasts.

You can reach the Mullayanagiri summit either through trekking or you can take your vehicle to the top from where the peak is 500 steps away.

Actually, the trek to Baba Budangiri starts from the backside of Shiva temple on Mullayanagiri peak. It is a 9 km long trek which will normally take you 5 to 6 hours to complete. You can divide the trek into 2 phases.

Mullayanagiri To Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint.

 It is a 3 km journey amidst grasslands and Shola forest. In the end, you will reach Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint near Attigundi road, where you have to seek permission to continue your trek. You can take a break, have your packed lunch and refill your bottle here. It is an easy path without much confusion as the pathway is clear.

From Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint To Bababudangiri

On the other hand, this 6 km trekking trail is a bit confusing one. Mostly you will be walking on narrow ridges with the steep valley on one side and dense forest on the other side. Indeed, there is white marking done on the rocks to help fellow travellers with directions. However, make sure to follow the BSNL tower in Bababudangiri, which is visible from far, if you get lost. 

Camping can be done overnight near the Manikyadhara waterfalls.No need to worry about food, as there are few eateries near Baba Budangiri. However, if you wish to cook, you can find a lot of firewood and you can set up your barbeque.

Above all, the trail route can also be found on Google map. But to be on the safer side it is always better to ask locals, who know the path better than Google.

Usually, you can find auto-rickshaws or jeeps to get back to Chikmagalur main town. 

Also, try hiring a guide and trek to Kemmanagundi hills, Manikyadhara falls, or Gaalikere from Baba Budangiri.

Surathkal Beach, an unspoilt destination with endless stretches of shores meeting the Arabian Sea in the port city of Mangalore. Despite being just 13 km from the main city, this beach hasn’t lost one bit of its natural charm. Its coastline is studded with rocks, silky smooth sand, few palm trees, shallow blueish water, and secluded surroundings make it an ideal spot for a picnic. Mostly flooded with college kids on the weekends as this is situated right next to reputed NIT college. Hence, Surathkal beach is also popularly known as NIT Beach.

If you are a morning person, then head to the beach in the wee hours to get a true essence. Stroll a few metres onshore from the Surathkal beach towards fishermen village and experience the local side of this place  You can spot many fishermen laying their fishing nets and marching into the sea on their boats to catch fish. Apart from this, you can witness baby crabs crawling in silence into the ocean.

Not many eateries in spite of being next to the college. All you can find is some small shops that serve Maggi, omelettes, and hot Mangalorean chai. 

Things To Do In Surathkal Beach

Sadashiva Temple

The enchanting Sadashiv temple perched on a hillock appears conch shaped when viewed from the top angle. Temple is surrounded by 4 ponds and water in these ponds are considered sacred by locals.

Outside of this, there is mythology attached to this temple. As per the legends, how this temple got originated dates back to Ramayana times. When Lanka king Ravana tried to lift the Atma linga from the ground giving all his energy, tiny pieces flew in all directions. And, one of the pieces that landed here, made way for Sadashiva temple.

Surathkal Lighthouse 

Lighthouse stands tall atop of a rocky hillock and offers an uninterrupted panoramic view of the ocean and the countryside. It opens its door to travellers only from 4 to 5 pm with a cost of Rs 10/head attached to it. To avoid long queues make sure you are on spot at least 30 min prior to the actual time. Sunsets with a backdrop of the Arabian sea are perfect and pleasant to eyes when viewed from the top

How To Reach  Surathkal Beach

You can take city buses that are frequently available from Mangalore. You can hop on to Bus no 2, 2A, 45, or 41 from the state bank bus stop. After you get down from NIT stop, you need to take 10 mins to walk along the road that is studded with palm trees on both sides to reach Surathkal beach. Else you can take an autorickshaw from Mangalore to have a personal and broader view of the city.

Let me tell you how I landed up in Kochi. Usually, I don’t like roaming around Cities but this time fate had something in store for me. Until I placed a foot in Kochi, I didn\’t know where to stay, what things to do, and which places to visit in Kochi.

It was during the 2019 new year. I thought of spending the new year peacefully, so I chose to go to Munnar a small town in the Western Ghats region of Kerala. Everything went as per the plan, but I didn\’t get the return ticket to Bangalore. As a result, I had to go via Kochi which was 120km away to reach my destination.

I was fortunate enough to get a drop till Kochi. I reached Kochi by evening 5 but I was surprised to see the emptiness around me. After enquiring about a few localities who passed by me, they told me, due to some political reasons the whole city has come to halt and even transportation services won’t be available till the next day. I was a bit disappointed, but I had no other go rather than staying in Kochi.

I stayed in a hostel called “ The lost Hostels”. It is a budget place, it cost me around 350 INR per night with breakfast included. However, hostels will provide basic minimum facilities needed so don’t expect much from these places. The hostel was very close to the beach.

Furthermore, you can see a lot of travelers around the world staying in hostels. Best place to stay when you are traveling alone and to make a lot of friends.

It was one of the best experiences I have ever had even though I didn\’t plan for this. I was a little disappointed when I had to depart back to Bangalore that night, as I wanted to spend more time exploring this port city.

The nearest railway stations would be Gokarna and Ankola railway station which are 14 and 25km away respectively. Some trains won’t stop at Gokarna so get down at Ankola. Both these stations are connected to major cities likes Bangalore, Mumbai, Goa, and Mangalore.

Furthermore, the train from Bangalore will cost around 450 INR.

From railway stations either you can take an autorickshaw or there are plenty of local buses. In a bus, it cost around 40 INR and in Autorikshaw it might cost around 150 to 200 1NR.

Road

Major cities like Bangalore, Goa, and Mumbai are well connected to Gokarna. You can reach by taking a taxi or bus.
