Dabbe Falls is a hidden gem that is stuck in the Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary near Hosagadde village, Shimoga. You can see water gushing down from a cliff into a rocky valley from about 110 meters. Dabbe falls is a stepped waterfall, where a pool in each step overfills and flows down to another one below it. This is a picture-perfect waterfall that is immersed in nature and it is bound to sweep any one of their feet with its beauty. Moreover, as this place is tucked deep inside the jungles of western ghats, be prepared to take a hard day\’s trek. When you are at the bottom of the falls, jump into the huge pool formed by the waterfall and take a chill pill.

Mostly you will be hiking through muddy terrains, dense forests, paddy fields, crossing many streams, and descending steep cliffs to reach the falls.

Dabbe Falls Trekking Trail

After you reach Hosagadde village, you need to take the road that is right next to the Forest Department Board. It is a 6 km trek and it can be divided into 3 phases. We would suggest you take a local guide, as it is extremely risky venturing into unknown destinations.

In the first phase, you will mostly hike along the muddy jeep track inside the forest. It is an easy trek and it might take around 45 minutes. After you reach Hosagadde mane which is  3 km away from the start point, the first phase ends,

The next phase is a little tricky one, as you will be walking adjacent to a couple of streams amidst dense forests. In fact, you will come across 3 streams, all of it leads to Dabbe falls. It will be a herculean task to cross these streams during peak monsoon. It is better to take an experienced guide, who knows these places well. And after about 3 km, you will find a house amidst paddy fields. This house is popularly known as Dabbemane as the falls are just 1 km away from this spot. Here, you need to fill in your personal details, before you proceed further.

Dabbe  Falls Adventurous Phase

\"Dabbe

The final phase starts from Dabbemane and it is the toughest of all the phases. For instance, sometimes you will be required to hike down a steep cliff which is 80 degrees and it will be very slippery. Try taking a rope or make sure to grab onto tree branches or roots that are coming out of the earth, for safety purposes. Distance is about 1 km, but it will take at least 45 min to 1 hour to reach the foot of falls. Halfway through the last phase, you will be able to hear the sound of falls as well as see it. Moreover, if you want to take a dip or get closer to falls, you need to jump across huge rocky boulders that are slippery.

During monsoon as the water tends to rush with great force and the path gets extremely slippery. You will not be allowed after a certain point above the cliff, from where the waterfall is available.

While you are trekking you might come across birds like Kingfishers, hornbills, flycatchers, Asian bluebirds, herons, etc. Besides this, you can also spot a wide variety of wildlife like macaques, deers, giant squirrels, langurs, and many others.

As this is untouched by masses, you will not find any shops or eateries around the corner. Try carrying your packed food and water bottles.

How To reach Dabbe Falls

Dabbe is just 30 km away from the famous Jog Falls. If you are heading to this place on your own vehicle, then take Bhatkal Siddapura Highway towards Hosagadde village. You can park your vehicle near the Hosagadde Forest department board. Otherwise, you can take a government bus that runs on this route and get down near Hosagadde.

Kambala is a popular and unique festival (or sports) that happens annually among the farming communities in Dakshina Kannada. To your surprise, the main superstar of this festival is the big Buffaloes. In other words, Kambala is a buffalo race that happens on the slushy paddy fields between a pair of buffaloes that is driven by farmers. These races that take place between the months of November and March are organized by Tuluva landlords and households.

Kambala is an age-long tradition that traces back to 1000 years. This festival is dedicated to Lord Kadri Manjunatha, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Earlier days, this was celebrated to please god for a good harvest and to keep crops away from diseases. And, also for the entertainment of villages of this region. Slowly these traditions are officially converted to races, mainly to preserve the tradition and carry forwards the customs to future generations.

Usually, the winner of this race is gifted with banana and coconut. However, in recent years as these races are pulling in a huge number of crowds, the winners are gifted with cold or silver coins. Above all, winning this competition is all about pride for farmers rather than money involved in it.

There are 4 major categories of Kambala namely Negilu, Hagga, Adda Halage, and Kene Halege. Winners of these events are judged based on various factors. These races are conducted on slushy paddy fields that are about 150 meters in length and 10 meters in width. Over 50 races are held annually and nearly 130 to 180 pairs of buffaloes participate in it

Initially, it was known by the name “Karaga” but now it is called Kambala. The word Kambala is derived from Dravidian origin word “ Kampa Kala” which means “slushy Muddy fields”

Hoysala Kings Association With Kambala

As per the legends, it was Hoysala rulers, who wanted to use trained buffaloes for their wars. After noticing the speed of buffaloes, they started racing them against one another. Later the tradition was carried forward by feudal lords and now it is organized by normal people.

Famous Places Where Kambala Can be Viewed

Of course, Kadri Kambala Field in Mangalore is gotta be on top of the list. It is a star-studded event which is usually conducted in the close premises of Kadri Manjunatha Temple. These sports were patronized by the Kings Of Alupa Kingdom who ruled Mangalore 300 years ago. For the above reasons, this festival is popularly known as “Devara Kambala” or “Arasu Kambala”.Another place, where you can see huge followers is Pilikula.

Apart from this, you can visit places like Bajagodi, Baladi Beedu, Puttur, Gulvadi, Vandaru Kamala Ketu, Uppinagadi, etc.

Usually, in Vandaro and Choradi village you can witness this festival being celebrated to please god for a good harvest and it is a non-competitive event.

How are Buffaloes Trained

Nowadays, Kambala is organized Professionally with a huge crowd to cheer them. Buffaloes are trained and prepared well throughout the year, just to participate in events. These beasts are provided with proper food on time, massaged regularly to prevent injuries, medical checkups are done frequently, and even a personal caretaker is appointed to look after them. In addition to this, there are main owners who have gone one step ahead and built swimming pools just for Buffaloes to relax.

Not to mention, the fact that these buffaloes are decorated in a beautiful way with lots of colors.

In the recent past, these events are held at nights under floodlights. Whole areas will be lit up with colorful lights, small handicraft shops, and eateries. Every year nearly 20,000 people come to witness Kambala.

Chembra Peak Trek

\"Chembra

Initially, you have to hike along a flat muddy road next to aromatic tea plantations for 1.5 km. After this, you should trek for another 2 Kilometers through the dense forest and green meadows to reach the heart-shaped lake. Indeed, the sight of the lake with the backdrop of misty mountains of Nilgris is something that is out of the box.

Chembra summit is just 1.5 Kilometers from the heart-shaped lake, but it is harder than the previous one. Mostly you will be hiking through rugged and uneven surfaces that are steep. But as you are gaining height, the splendid view of the foamy clouds; the valley down below with hues of green; quaint little Wayanad towns; and also offers a panoramic view of Kozhikode & evergreen Nilgiris hills adjoining the Chembra peak is a breath-taking experience altogether.

There are many small shops at the base of the hills which serve snacks and water bottles. Try carrying some snacks with you to stay energetic during the trek, as the trail is a bit tricky.

If time permits and if you are willing to shell out some extra bucks local guides will be happy to take you around the tribal settlement sites near Chembra Hill.

How To Reach Chembra Hill Base

There are plenty of bus services that operate between Bangalore and Wayanad. You have to get down from the bus in Kalpetta (the headquarters of Wayanad). Once you get down in Kalpetta, you rent a hotel or stay to freshen up near the bus stand. After that, you can either take a local bus or hire an auto-rickshaw or jeep from Kalpetta to Meppadi town which is 8 Km away.
