Varkala, a quiet little coastal town, backdropped by the Arabian sea, lies at a distance of 40 km, on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. This hamlet is home to one of the best seasonal beaches in the world called Varkala beach, which is about 10 km from Varkala town. Varkala beach is also known as Papanasam beach as it is believed that taking a dip in the water here washes away all the sins.

Laidback Varkala beach is known for its lofty and lengthy red cliffs, dramatic sunsets, picture-perfect landscapes, deep green waters, prolonged beach stretches, coastal cuisines,  coconut grooves, shacks, and tiny shops. And, if you are an adventure freak then you gotta try out parasailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, and surfing

Apart from this, Varkala has several other tourist spots like  Janardhan Swamy which is 2000 years old, temple, Shivagiri Mutt, Sivagiri Tunnel, Archengo fort, beaches, and lighthouse.

There are two parts to the beach namely northern cliff and southern cliff. Northern cliff has a lot of stays, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and shops that are purely dedicated to the tourist crowds. Whereas the southern cliff is a contrast to the north with less crowd, quieter surroundings, and more of local people. Moreover, the south cliff side is considered more sacred and there is a road here that leads to Janardhana Swamy temple. But, today we will see how to spend a day in Varkala beach through some beautiful photos.

Now that,  you have seen the introduction, let us get into the story right away. This is my first trip to one of the best offbeat beaches in Kerala.

Varkala Beach Tour Through A Photo Story

Staying In Hostels

\"plenty

Town welcomed me with open arms. I stayed in one of the Portuguese style villas that are converted to backpacker hostels in the North cliff. They charged me around Rs. 500  for a day along with a  delicious complimentary breakfast attached to it. This place sure seemed beautiful with lots of greenery and tall palm trees around. If you are traveling alone, hostels are the best place to make new friends, laze around the town, and save huge bucks. There is a wide range of hostels, homestays, and resorts, which is similar to the one I stayed in. You can choose the one that best suits your budget.

\"Streets

Streets leading to the beach are narrow and stuffed with trees on both sides. Not just beach walks, even strolling the streets of Varkala will leave a soothing effect on you.

\"Beautiful

\"\"

Get up early and try heading to the beach in the wee hours to get a me-time. You will hardly find anyone except for some Fishermans who are making arrangements to sell freshly captured fishes. You can take a walk peacefully as the waves keep crashing at your feet and Sunrises above the horizon.

\"Varkala

As the sun rises, beaches here tend to become a little busy. You can spot fishermen setting up the fish stalls right in the middle of the beaches. On the other hand, locals and restaurant owners lining up to cash in on fresh catches of seafood from fishermen

Breakfasts In Varkala Beach

\"Wheat

When in Kerala never miss out on Puttu, one of the popular breakfasts across the whole of Kerala. Usually, they serve two kinds of Puttu, one made of wheat and another one made of rice. You can choose to have it either with banana and honey or with Kadala curry( Chana masala). I have a sweet tooth, hence I chose to have it with banana and honey.

\"Ghee

Ghee dosas that are huge, crispy, and tasty are the specialty of this region. And, it is usually served with coconut chutney and sambar that is absolutely delicious. I had my breakfast in a restaurant called Ottupura that is budget-friendly as well as serves tasty food.

Papanasam Beach- The Sin Healer

\""Papanasam\"/

This temple on the banks of the Arabian sea is where you can spot people performing spiritual or religious rituals. If you want to wash away all your sins then take a dip in Papanasam beach. Additionally, the water washes the plants that are nearby, which have medicinal value, hence giving rise to the healing power of water.

Time To Go For Shopping On The Cliff

\"Shopping

\"shops

Shop till you drop at the endless rows of shacks that are lined up on the North cliff. There is jewelry, handicrafts, clothes, food products, spices, ayurvedic products, etc lined up just for shoppers. Be prepared to bargain as they might charge a hefty amount knowing that you are a traveler.

\"Fishermen

As you enter the village, you can spot plenty of fishers working on their daily chores. Few of them catching fish, few repairing the nets, few getting their boats ready to march into sea, and few packing fishes that need to be sent to market.

On the other hand, I was clicking as many pictures as I could. This is when I heard some fishers calling me to help them pull a huge fishing rope, as one of their colleagues had fallen sick. I was a bit surprised at the beginning but my “never say never attitude” made me say “Yes” to their request. I can call this one of the most unique experiences of my life. When I looked from far away everything looked easy but once I laid my hands on the rope, I got to know, I was in for a hard day’s work. I nearly worked for 2 hours on a sunny day and at the end of it, I had no regrets. I was happy and fulfilled to have tried something new in life.

\"Fish

The story isn’t over yet. Fishers were humble and very nice to me.  After the work was done, they invited me to their home and offered me a delicious fish fry for helping them out. The fish fry was out of the world and I had never tasted such an amazing thing before. Now, this is what you call a perfect day. I thanked them for the food and started marching north towards Kappil beach, which had black sand.

Varkala beach Cliff has a variety of cuisines from all around the world. Be it  Indian, Italian, Mediterranian, Thai food, Continental, or even local cuisines, you name it, it has got it.

These are some of my favorite choice of restaurants In Varkala Beach

  •  Trattorias Restaurant
  •  Clafouti
  • God’s own country Kitchen
  • Cafe del Mar
  • The Bait & Hook: Seaside Restaurant
  • Darjeeling Cafe

Most of the restaurants here are a little bit on a costlier side, as it mainly serves the tourist. If you are a backpacker and want to save a few bucks then try heading towards the Varkala main town. There are plenty of buses or auto-rickshaws to reach the main town. However, restaurants in town serve only local food but the taste is exceptional.

Just outside the restaurants, you can see the local fishermen showcasing their freshly caught seafood. You can choose your own food from whatever is being displayed and have it prepared in tandoori style by the restaurant people.

\"restaurants

As the evening approaches, all the streets on the top of the cliff turn colorful with all kinds of lights being lit.

As Varkala is a holy town, none of the restaurants or beach shacks here are allowed or licensed to serve alcohol. However, most of the restaurants here do serve alcohol by charging a hefty amount, knowing that it is illegal.

\"Fish

I chose to have Karimeen Pollichathu or fish fried with spicy masala by wrapping a banana leaf around, one of the famous local delicacies.

\"Night

Don’t expect parties to be as crazy as the parties that happen in Goa. However. Some beach shacks like “ Rock & roll” & few other lounges do play music till late night.

Furthermore, you can go watch kathakali performances as an alternative to night parties.

Conclusion

This is the best place if you want to relax, detox,  or rejuvenate yourself peacefully. And, if you are allergic to the crowded beaches of Goa, then Varkala beach needs to be on your list.

Depression, anxiety or sadness whatever you call it, everyone would have experienced those emotions at least once in their lifetime. Sometimes people are depressed for the reason best known to them and others time without any reason. You need not worry about depression it is just a common thing that anyone would experience. In this, I will be telling you Ways in which Travelling can help you fight Depression

In fact, it is been told that more than 300 million people including all ages suffer from depression.

Even I did come across such feelings right from my college days due to various reasons.

Ways in which Travelling can help you overcome/fight Depression

Nature acts as a Natural Anti Depressant

\"Kodachadri

Not just for mental problems even for physical problems, nature acted as a cure. In the olden days if people had a wound they use to apply wet mud or clay to cure it. It has been scientifically proved that there are certain clays that help you fight bacteria in the wound.

Not just that even during the Ramayana period, sanjeevni plants were used to cure serious medical conditions. Moreover, even till today medicines are made using natural substances.

This is to say that nature has got everything in it to cure all kinds of problems.

Looking at nature always makes us forget all our worries and makes us happy. Our brains are designed in such a way that everything gets cured.

Big Perspective

\"Bigger

I love places that you realize how tiny you and your problems are- Anonymous

When we are in the same place, we have a tendency to magnify our problems to such an extent, that we think we can never put an end to the problem.

We think we are the only ones who are dealing with the problems. That too after the arrival of Instagram, Facebook and other social media, you feel, except you, everyone is happy as they are posting some nice pics and statuses. But that isn’t the fact, remember one thing everyone has their own problems and they are fighting in their own way to get out of it. No one likes to post sad things on social media so you need not worry.

It is always a better solution to hit the road. Only after travelling we will realize how small our problem is when compared to others. You will start approaching life in a positive way when you know your problem is negligible and can be solved. When positivity is filled within you, depression starts fading its way out.

Meeting New People

\"meet

I think the root cause of problems that turn into depression is because you tend to beat around the bush. You stay in the same place and with same people knowing it is very painful.

When you are depressed talking to people around you becomes such a daunting task, as it keeps reminding you of something unpleasant. If you don’t talk you feel lonely and loneliness adds on to the depression.

Furthermore, when you travelling, there is nothing you can do, you have to talk to people. You can’t run away from people as you did in the past. Right from the moment you leave your house you have to talk to the taxi driver, hotel staff, restaurants staffs, tour guide, other tourists and many others whomever you come across. When you talk about different things to different people constantly your mind gets diverted and you will feel peaceful.

Above all, when you are travelling no one will judge you based on your past. This itself is a big relief because depression is also caused as you are worried about what others think of you.

When you are travelling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you.No yesterday on road. – William least Heat-Moon.

Travelling to a new place, new people and new things to about will always boost your positive attitude and happiness and I personally feel this is one of the best things that can help you fight depression.

Travelling makes you take better decisions in life

There are times when you can’t take decisions or advice from someone else also won’t be convincing enough. You will be completely confused and won\’t be knowing what to do next.

Now you can ask me how is depression connected to decision making. In fact, difficulty in decision making is the core symptom of depression.

Take a solo trip to whichever destination you like to travel. When you take a solo trip you have been pushed to make decisions by yourself let that be to small or a big issue. You will be your own boss and no one to help you except you. All your hidden talents will pop out of nowhere. You will be amazed to see your own strength and out of nowhere, you will gain confidence.

You will realize that there is a solution to all the problems in this world and you start to find solutions for your problems.

After you return from the trip you will be completely a changed man. You will try to handle problems in an easy and matured way. You will make the right decisions which will get rid of depression from your life without causing harm to your mental health.

Travelling Involves More Physical Activities

\"kagal

Travel to different places and get involved in trekking, hiking, water sports or any other adventure things. Involving in physical activities like what is mentioned above will help you release Endorphins chemical with your body. Endorphins chemical helps relieve stress, boost happiness and combat depression in us.

Start travelling and signing for trekking, rock climbing and other activities to over depression.

I guess that is the reason why our elders always advised us to involve in physical activities on a regular basis. And it is very much evident that in the past, mental or stress-related issues weren’t seen much. Maybe it is also due to the lifestyle that we are living is leading us into such issues.

Planning and Anticipation of Vacation

A study conducted in Dutch proves that planning and anticipating your vacation can boost your happiness to the maximum. It is also told vacation or travel anticipation can boost happiness for 8 consecutive weeks. Therefore, start planning your trip to get rid of depression at least for some time.

Planning Your Itinerary keeps you busy and mind in focus

Travelling and Sleeping

\"camping

One thing to be noted here is when you are depressed, you will be deprived of sleep. You won’t be able to sleep without taking sleeping pills. When you don’t get sleep, the thoughts that are causing depression starts multiplying and leads to severe mental illness.

It so happens when you are travelling, you will be doing a lot of things that you won’t do it on a regular basis. Activities like rushing to the airport, trekking, getting into a bus, walking, running, water sports etc. As a result, you will be dead tired not to sleep at the end of the day. No sleeping pills are required to put you off to sleep.

Travelling Answers Many Of Our Questions

Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.- William S. Burroughs

It is evident, you get answers when you least expect them. Therefore, instead of sitting in one place and thinking about the problem over and over again, go on a vacation. When you are on vacation relaxing, somewhere along your journey you would have got answers for many problems.

Travelling helps you hunt down the cause for the depression.

Conclusion

I think I was able to convince travelling is one of the best things to do to which can help you fight depression. Maybe, travel can’t cure depression completely but at least it will initiate the cause. Travel can build a strong platform in a positive way to fight against depression. If travel is something which is making a pathway to overcoming depression means, instead of questioning whether it correct or not, you need to put forth your step in that direction.

Do you want to make friends in a hostel while travelling and don\’t know how? don\’t worry you are in the right place. Everyone feels nervous when we are surrounded by unknown people in an unknown place.

My experience

\"Short

I hadn\’t heard much about hostels before I started my solo travel. My 1st solo trip was to Varkala (a small beach town near Trivandrum). It was during new year time, the cost of single rooms was damn high. I had a fixed budget for my trip and I didn’t want to exceed the budget. I was a bit confused and it was during this time, one of my friends suggested the hostel stays.

When I was about to enter the hostel, I had a weird feeling like, how a small kid would feel on the 1st day of the school. As I stepped into the hostel, all the guests started starring at me, like who is this new kid in town. My nervousness and tensed look on the face never seem to calm down.

Even after travelling to different places and staying in a lot of hostels. I still feel little tensed when I am about to enter into a new hostel.

I would like to share my personal experience as in how I make friends while travelling. All points mentioned below are tried and tested ways.

Ways To Make Friends In A Hostel While Travelling

Choose Your Hostel Wisely

\"choose

It is one of the most important things, as you will spend a good amount of time in a hostel while you are travelling.

I did make a lot of mistakes initially by not making choosing proper hostels which are suited for me. You have to remember one thing all hostels won’t be the same. If you are a bit louder and confident like I do, choose a larger hostel or else to choose a small hostel with lesser people.

Many a time I ended up choosing family or couples friendly hostels. I can tell how much awkward it would feel and you won’t find anyone to talk with. If you are in the ’20s and you like to party like hell, then, please stay away from hostels, which promote family or couple rooms.

Furthermore, always read customer reviews and check out what facilities they provide before booking your hostel.

Always Stay In A Dorm Room

\"Dorm

There will be private rooms in the hostels, so always choose a dorm if you have intentions to make friendships. Most friendships are made in a dorm as you live close to each other or probably on top of each other.

Personally, I feel its ideal and always better to choose 4 or 6-bed dorms. I find it annoying as a number of people keep walking in and out when you stay in 8 or more bed dorms.

You need to develop a skill to judge people as quickly as possible and probably not on their character. Some people talk instantly and others don’t so never disturb anyone who is reserved and wants to have their me-time.

It is always a best practice to say “hello” and introduce yourself to everyone in the dorm as soon as you enter. Once you have shuttled down, ask a few more questions to roommates like “ where they are from’ and “how long are they staying?”.Asking questions is always the best possible way to break the ice between fellow travellers.

I have seen many people hiding in their bunk, by reading books, sitting in front of a laptop with headphones on. In fact, in the initial days of my journey even I did the same thing and it took me a while to break the shackles.

Golden hours of a hostel

There is something known as golden hours in a hostel, that is when people in the hostel are getting ready to go out in the evening. Usually, during 5 or 6 o clock in the evening. Always try staying in a hostel during golden hours as you will be invited by others or vice versa, for parties, evening walks, night out, dinner etc

Hangout In The Communal Area

\"spend

Every hostel will have a communal area. Generally, the communal area is a place where a lot of lonely travellers hangout to make friendships with others. You want to make friendships then better hangout in a communal area and it is an indication that you are trying to get along with other travellers.

Communal areas can be anything like hostel bars, Kitchen, tv lounge, garden area, playroom, pool etc.

It is always told the communal area is the best place to get or make friends but that wasn’t the case for me when I visited the hostel 1st time. I was a bit afraid to go sit in a communal area, as it always has a big group of travellers sitting around. At this moment I need to thank my Dutch friend John, who helped me overcome fear and break the ice.

What better way to make friends than hanging out for a glass of beer in the hostel bar. You can chat, watch your favourite movies, play games, conduct a music jam and last but not least cook food together by sharing your recipes.

Participate In Gathering Or Events

\"participate

Most hostels are structured in such a way to support all kind of fun activities.some or the other events keep happening in hostels. usually, it will be organized by the hostel or even guests who are staying there. There will be notice boards in every hostel, so check for events on the notice board or ask staffs about it.

Get To Know The Staffs

\"get

Hostel staffs are the most interesting, friendly and full of energy people to talk with. They know in and out of the town. Make sure you save their number and always try calling them when you are in trouble, Staffs will inform you about the favourite places to dine, secret places to visit, places where you get cheap foods and majorly they will introduce you to other guests and local guides. I think this is one awesome and best way to make friends in a hostel while travelling.

Ask questions and strike a conversation

If you are in the hostel means that you both share something in common. You love travelling and exploring the place,  so does the other person. Always try wearing a smile on the face and keep eye contact while talking to someone. Don’t isolate yourself.

Ask a few well-crafted questions and try breaking the ice.

These are the questions I ask when I meet someone new

  1. Where are you from?
  2. How long have you been travelling?
  3. Where and all have been so far?
  4. Where are you going next?
  5. Ask them tips to travel for a long period

It is a basic human tendency when you talk to someone others will join you and in no time you would have found your friend.

Friends over food

\"group

I can’t think of any better way to become friends other than over a plate of food. Food has got so much power to it as it always gets people together and makes everyone happy.

Usually, in the hostels, most travellers sit together in a big table and have breakfasts. It is during the breakfast most plans are made, as to what needs to be done for the rest of the day. All travellers will share what are they up to and by chance, if you had intended to do the same, you can join hands with each other. I think this is one of the best ways to make friends in a hostel while travelling.

Share Your Stuff

\"share

Sharing is caring

It is true the more you share the more you get it back. And when you share something it always strengthens the bond between any two. You can share snacks, food, books, music, movie downloads etc.

You can cook little extra food and share it with other fellow travellers and this is on my top of the list.

Sharing can be the best ways to earn more friends in no time. And chances are, seeing this other guest will also start sharing stuff and you will get it back when you need it the most.

Organize Your Own Events

\"organize

When you go to a hostel during non-season, chances are there won’t be much of events. Therefore you gotta be on your toes to make your own events.

Plan for an event and put up posters or write it on the notice board in a common area. You have to promote and create awareness among other fellow travellers. You will become famous and you will be remembered as a person who brings everyone together.

If I am staying in a place for a long period, I usually organize small games and food tours for other guests. You can choose to organize whatever you like for example trekking, cooking, fitness-related stuff, music, games etc

Be Flexible With Your Plan

\"Suraj

You have to make sure, you are flexible with your plans. Initially, when I started to travel, when I would be invited by anyone to join hands with them. But I use to refuse most of the times as I was shy and it was outside my comfort zone. I regret having refused those offers by my fellow travellers.

You will meet so many people on your journey. And there is no reason why you can’t change your plan and go on an adventure with others. Many a time there are chances you might cross paths again, so always yes to new opportunities. If you never seek you will never know your strengths.

Conclusion

You don\’t have to be afraid of solo travelling, solo travel is not always about travelling or being all alone. There are plenty of opportunities to make friends while travelling but we have to search for it. I have tested all the ways mentioned above. it has worked wonders for me and it will work for anybody. I think staying in a hostel is a great way to make friends easy while travelling
